Why can I receive but not send email?

This article applies to those who have already created POP accounts in the Big Black Bag Email Controls and are using their own email software, such as Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Outlook Express or Mac Mail to send and receive email.

If you can receive but NOT send email and you're certain that you have entered in your outgoing (SMTP) server settings exactly as show within the Email Controls, then it is likely that your ISP is not allowing you to transmit SMTP traffic on their network. This allows them to control spam originating from their network better. Please try the following two remedies:

  1. Change the outgoing port in your email software's preferences from 25 to 587.
  2. If the above fails, it is likely that you will have to use your ISP's email server to send your email. You will need to contact your ISP to find out what outgoing server (SMTP) settings you'll need. You will not alter your incoming server settings.
